About the market > Consumption
There is normally a correlation between the level of a
country’s economic development and its level of energy
consumption. Energy consumption in the Nordic countries is above
the average in the rest of the OECD countries. In recent years
energy consumption in the Nord Pool area has increased by more
than 1 % each year. Overall, the region consumes about 400 TWh
in a normal year, and is thus the third largest energy consumer
in Western Europe (after Germany and France).
Norwegian and Finnish industry are growing most
In Norway a large share of the consumption growth is linked
to major investments in the petroleum industry. The next few
years, new development projects continue to require large
amounts of electricity, and this will provide supply problems to
Mid-Norway. Therefore, action is taken to supply the region with
more power. Also in Finland consumption growth is linked to
growth in power intensive industry.
In Denmark and Sweden growth in electricity consumption has
been moderate in recent years.
